17세기 에스파냐 바로크 회화의 황금시대를 대표하는 화가.
색조에 약간 차가운 느낌을 주던 세비야파적(派的)그림에서 점차 안정감과 미감(美感)을 띤 훈훈한 느낌을 주는 화풍으로 바뀌었고, 풍속 화가, 초상화가로서도 재능을 발휘하였으며, 다작의 화가였다.
안달루시아 세비야 출생. 17세기 에스파냐 회화의 황금시대를 대표 화가. 고아가 되어 불운한 소년기를 보냈지만, 1639년까지 J.카스틸료 밑에서 그림공부를 하여 화가로서 두각을 나타내고 이어 세비야화단의 중심인물이 되었다. 주로 이탈리아의 S.라파엘로 (1483∼1520), I코레조 (1494∼1534) 등과 북유럽회화의 거장 P.P.루벤스 (1577∼1640), A.반다이크 (1599∼1641) 등의 명작에서 많은 것을 배우고, 그 때까지 색조에 약간 차가운 느낌을 주던 세비야파적(派 的) 그림에서 점차 안정감과 미감(美感)을 띤 훈훈한 느낌을 주는 화풍으로 바뀌었다.
그가 즐겨 그린 성모화는 미묘한 명암과 우아한 형태, 따사로운 색조 속에 자애와 경건함이 가득한 감미로운 작풍그림으로 그를 '에스파냐의 라파엘로' 라고까지 불렀다. 거리의 거지를 소재로 한 작품도 많으며, 그들 작품에서는 어떤 감미로움이 감돌면서도 날카로운 사실력에 의해 독특한 매력이 풍긴다. 한편 1660년에 신설한 세비야 아카데미의 회장이 되어서는 많은 조수와 제자를 길러냈다.
벨라스케스(1599∼1660) 와 함께 에스파냐 바로크의 대표적 화가로, 풍속화가·초상화가로서도 재능을 발휘하였으며, 다작의 화가였다. 작품으로 1645∼1646 년 세비야프란시스코수도원의 복도에 그린 11장의 그림은 풍속화와 종교화, 사실과 종교적 정감의 결합이고, 마드리드 프라도미술관에 소장되어 있는 《원죄 없는 마리아의 발현》 (1678)은 그의 예술을 대표하는 작품이며,《로마 지방관의 꿈》 1664)에는 깊은 종교적 정열이 담겨져 빛과 색의 아름다운 조화를 이루었다. |
