파올로 베로네세 (Paolo Veronese) ② <1528년 ~ 1588년 4월 19일> 이탈리아의 화가     본명은 Paolo Caliari이며 1528년 이탈리아 베네치아 공화국 베로나에서 태어나 1588. 4. 9 베네치아에서 사망하였다. 16세기 베네치아 화파의 주요화가들 가운데 한 사람으로서 우의적 주제 또는 성경이나 역사에서 따온 주제를 화려한 색채로 그린 거대한 캔버스화가 그의 전형적인 작품으로, 거기에는 고전시대의 건축물을 배경으로 수많은 인물이 등장한다. 색채의 대가인 베로네세는 방의 실제 공간 너머까지 시야를 확장시키는 환영적인 구도에도 뛰어난 솜씨를 보였다.   초기 칼리아리가 본명인 그는 고향 베로나의 이름을 따서 베로네세라고 불리게 되었다. 처음에는 아버지의 뒤를 이어 석공이 될 생각으로 석공의 도제 생활을 했지만 그림에 각별한 흥미를 보였기 때문에 14세 때 안토니오 바딜레라는 화가의 도제가 되었다. 그는 나중에 바딜레의 딸 엘레나와 결혼했다. 베로네세는 바딜레한테서 그림의 기본기를 충실히 배웠을 뿐 아니라 인간과 건축물을 하나로 융합시킨 그림에 대한 열정도 물려받았다. 지금까지 알려진 그의 작품들 가운데 최초의 작품인 〈베빌라쿠아 라치세 제단화 Bevilacqua-Lazise Altarpiece〉의 화풍은 바딜레의 영향을 반영하고 있다. 베로네세는 또한 도메니코 브루사소르치, 잠바티스타 첼로티, 파올로 파리나티 등에게서도 영향을 받았다. 이들은 마니에리스모 양식에 매혹되어 줄리오 로마노와 라파엘로, 파르미자노 및 미켈란젤로의 작품을 연구했다. 베로네세가 1551년에 트레빌레의 빌라 소란차에 그린 프레스코(지금은 카스텔프란코의 산리베랄레 교회에 있음)의 단편들에서 볼 수 있는 우아하고 장식적인 인물들은 이미 새로운 화풍을 암시해 준다. 베로네세가 1552년에 만토바 대성당에 그린 웅장하고 화려한 〈성 안토니우스의 유혹 Temptation of St. Anthony〉에는 미켈란젤로의 영향이 뚜렷이 드러나 있다.   1553년에 베네치아에 입성한 베로네세는 두칼레 궁전의 여러 부분을 장식하는 일과 관련하여 베네치아의 대가들과 오랫동안 함께 일하게 되었다 (→ 색인 : 도제 궁전). 그가 처음으로 의뢰받아 완성한 살라 델 콘실리오 데이 디에치(10인 위원회 회의실)의 천장화는 원숙기에 이른 그의 화풍을 보여준다. 그림을 보는 이의 머리 위에서 인물들이 실제로 떠다니는 것처럼 보이게 하는 교묘한 단축법과 화려한 색채 및 그늘진 부분에도 색채로 명암을 구사하는 밝은 화면이 두드러진다.   1555년에 베로네세는 베네치아의 산세바스티아노 수도원 원장의 의뢰를 받아 교회당 장식에 착수했는데, 그는 나중에 이 교회에 묻혔다. 베로네세는 이전에 두칼레 궁전에서는 주로 첼로티와 협력하여 일했지만 산세바스티아노 수도원에서는 혼자 일했다. 천장에 그린 〈에스테르 이야기 Story of Esther〉에는 건축물의 번쩍이는 테두리 안에 단축법으로 묘사된 인물들을 배열하는 엄격한 구도, 그리고 밝은 터치 몇 개로 마치 살아 있는 것처럼 생생하게 묘사한 전면과 후면의 인물들을 거의 헤아릴 수 있을 만큼 나란히 배열하는 그의 장식적인 취미가 처음으로 나타나 있다. 무라노에 있는 트레비소 가문의 아름다운 침실을 비롯하여 베네치아 귀족들의 저택과 궁전을 장식한 이 솜씨좋은 프레스코 화가는 교회에 그린 우아한 프레스코(1558)에 성 세바스티아누스의 일생을 묘사했다. 그는 오르간의 뚜껑 2개를 장식할 때(1559) 극단적인 단축법을 구사하여 환상적인 공간 표현과 율동적인 구성 솜씨를 다시금 보여 주었다. 베로네세는 산세바스티아노 수도원을 장식하고 있는 동안 제단화와 예배용 그림을 그려달라는 주문을 수없이 받았으며, 〈만찬 Suppers〉을 그려달라는 주문도 여러 번 받았다. 〈엠마오의 순례자들 The Pilgrims of Emmaus〉과 〈바리사이파 사람의 집에서 열린 잔치〉 같은 그림에서 묘사한 만찬이라는 주제는 그로 하여금 복잡한 르네상스 시대 건축물을 배경으로 수많은 인물들을 그려넣을
