'베네치아 파'에 속하는 위대한 마니에리스모 양식의 화가이며 후기 르네상스의 가장 중요한 미술가.
아버지가 염색장인(tintore)이므로 Tintoretto(작은 염색장인)라는 이름이 붙었다. P.베로네세와 함께 난숙기 베네치아파의 대표자이다. 처음에는 V.티치아노의 제자였으나, 1545∼46년 로마를 여행하며 미켈란젤로 및 마니에리스트들의 감화를 받았다.
48년의 《사라센인의 해난구조》(베네치아아카데미아 소장)는 베네치아의 전통적인 화려한 색채와 마니에리스모의 형식·구도를 융합한 화풍이 이미 완성되었음을 보여준다. 64∼87년 스쿠오라 디 산 로코의 벽화·천장화로써 신약성서와 성 로코의 생애를 묘사하였고, 또 파라초 두칼레의 재흥에 따라 《천국》(1588∼90)을 포함한 방대한 그림을 다수 제작하였다.
만년에는 《최후의 만찬》(베네치아 산조르조 마조레 소장) 《십자가에 못박힌 그리스도》 《목욕하는 수산나》 《베데스다 연못》 《이집트의 성모 마리아》 등을 그렸다. 빛과 색채의 극적인 효과, 왜곡된 공간표현 등의 기법은 16세기 후반의 마니에리스모 발전에 영향을 끼쳤다. |
