틴토레토(Tintoretto) ③ <1518년-1594년> 이탈리아의 화가 본명은 Jacopo Robusti   자화상(Self-Portrait with a Book) c. 1585 / Oil on canvas, 73 x 58 cm Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence   베네치아파에 속하는 위대한 마니에리스모 양식의 화가이며 후기 르네상스의 가장 중요한 미술가.   초기 그림으로는 〈비너스와 마르스를 놀라게 하는 불카누스 Vulcan Surprising Venus and Mars〉와 마니에리스모 양식의 〈간음한 여인과 그리스도 Christ and the Adulteress〉·〈최후의 만찬 Last Supper〉(1547, 산마르쿠올라 교회) 등이 있다. 점점 빛과 공간의 극적 효과에 관심을 기울이던 그는 마침내 〈율법과 금송아지 The Law and the Golden Calf〉(1562경) 같은 원숙한 작품에서 밝고 환상적인 분위기의 효과를 달성했다.   틴토레토는 매우 개성적인 기법과 상상력을 지닌 화가로서 끊임없이 그것을 발전시켰다. 그의 집안이 원래 루카 출신이라는 것은 거의 틀림없지만, 틴토레토(그의 아버지의 직업인 실크 염색공, 즉 tintore를 따서 지은 '어린 염색공'이라는 뜻의 별칭)는 태생 때문만이 아니라 그가 항상 베네치아에 살았고 또한 헤아릴 수 없이 많은 작품들로 그 도시의 외관을 꾸미는 데 이바지했기 때문에 베네치아의 화가로 여겨지고 있다.   그는 그 도시의 생활을 사실적으로 묘사했으며 종교적이고 세속적인 요소들이 복잡하게 얽혀 있는 베네치아 미술의 회화적 발전을 대표했을뿐더러 16세기 이탈리아의 극적인 역사의 일부를 이루는 인간사회의 신화들을 적나라하게 보여주었다. 틴토레토의 미술은 그가 죽은 뒤 여러 해가 지나면서 베네치아에서 많은 논쟁을 일으켰으며, 특히 베네치아의 회화에 관한 17세기의 중요한 비평가인 마르코 보스키니의 예리한 평론들에서 높은 평가를 받았다.   로제 드 필은 보스키니의 뒤를 이어 틴토레토의 밝은 화풍을 극찬했다. 그러나 18세기로 갈수록, 나아가 19세기의 합리적인 신고전주의로 가까이 다가갈수록 틴토레토는 표현의 절제가 부족하고 시대의 감정에서 너무 동떨어진 미술가로 보이게 되었다. 존 러스킨의 낭만적 열정은 틴토레토의 미술에 대한 새로운 태도를 제시했다. 위대한 베네치아의 전통에 따라 해석할 때 현대의 미술사학에서는 그가 마니에리스모라는 폭넓은 유럽의 미술운동을 가장 전형적으로 대표하는 인물이라고 평가하고 있다.   - R.
